Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a respiratory virus that belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family. It was first discovered in 2001 and is known to cause respiratory infections in humans, particularly in children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms of hMPV infection are similar to those of other respiratory viruses, such as the common cold or influenza, and may include:

Wheezing
hMPV can lead to more severe respiratory illnesses, like bronchiolitis and pneumonia, especially in vulnerable populations. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and it can be diagnosed through laboratory tests such as PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) or viral culture.
There is no specific antiviral treatment for hMPV infections, so management typically focuses on relieving symptoms, such as through rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications. In severe cases, especially in young children or immunocompromised individuals, hospitalization may be required for supportive care.
